TRACES – TDS Upgraded Version by ITD

1. The Income-Tax Department has introduced an upgraded version of its TRACES (TDS Reconciliation Analysis and Correction Enabling System) portal, aiming to streamline tax compliance through a unified digital platform. The rollout coincides with the implementation of the new Income-Tax Act, 2025, which came into effect on April 1.

2.The move reflects a broader push towards digitisation, with authorities seeking to simplify procedures, reduce errors, and enhance transparency for both individuals and businesses. Why India needs an EV policy reset to hit targets and clean its cities

3. The revamped portal offers a single-window interface for all TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) and TCS (Tax Collected at Source) services. Users accessing the older TRACES link are automatically redirected to the new system, while a separate portal has been introduced for non-resident taxpayers.

4. A PMO-led panel has proposed that the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) regulate multidisciplinary partnership (MDP) firms through a new legal framework. This move aims to allow diverse professionals, including legal and tech experts, to collaborate under a single firm, enhancing India’s competitiveness in the global market .

5. Key Highlights:

– The MCA is drafting clauses and possible Companies Act amendments to avoid conflicts with existing laws.

– The rollout is targeted in the monsoon session.

– The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) suggests regulation based on majority control, keeping statutory audits exclusively with Chartered Accountants.

– The framework may allow professionals like lawyers, technology specialists, and emerging domain experts to participate.

6. Objectives:

– Enhance India’s competitiveness in the global market

– Allow integrated services, improving efficiency and client satisfaction

– Strengthen domestic firms to compete with international networks

7. Challenges:

– Ensuring professional independence and avoiding conflicts of interest

– Harmonizing supervision across regulators

– Addressing liability allocation and regulation

8. The MCA has invited stakeholder feedback on the proposal, aiming to create a robust and transparent framework for MDP firms.

9. The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) is considering creating a new common academic/examination authority to regulate or conduct exams and curriculum for CA, CS, and CMA courses, instead of leaving complete control with the three separate institutes. At this stage, available public references appear to be reports/discussions and commentary rather than a clearly published final gazette notification implementing it.
